Frequently Asked Questions

Will a pet sitter care for my pets in my home or theirs?
Our pet sitters will visit your pets in your own home. This helps maintain their routine as much as possible and makes them more comfortable in familiar surroundings.

Does Pet Cater just take care of pets while people are out of town?
Pet Cater is available to care for your pets while you're out of town, but we are also available for daily dog walks, checking on an ill or older pet during the day, or taking your pet to the groomer or vet. Pet Cater also provides house sitting services for those who may not have pets. Many people need various tasks taken care of while they are away, such as watering of plants and lawns, mail collection and having their home look occupied for security. We provide service based on your specific needs, so we encourage you to inquire about what we can do for you.

What days does Pet Cater provide services?
We work 7 days a week.

Does Pet Cater provide services during holidays?
Yes. However, there is an additional charge fee for the holiday.

Does Pet Cater offer overnight services?
We offer overnight stays should you request these services.

How many times a day should I have Pet Cater come visit my pets?
It's best to have a minimum of two visits per day for dogs; three visits would be ideal. One visit per day for cats is usually sufficient. Other pets, such as birds, fish, and other small animals will vary.

How long does each visit last?
This will vary, but normally visits last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour.

Is it possible to receive longer or more frequent visits?
Yes, we can work out a plan with you to do this.

Do I pay before or after my return?
We require payment either at your initial consultation or to be left to pick up at our first visit.

What if something happens and my pet sitter is unable to get to my pets?
We will have provisions in place in case of emergency.

Will Pet Cater keep my key?
We will offer to keep your key for future services. Ideally, for security purposes, your key will not have your name or address on it, and will be stored in a secure manner when not in use.

How are keys returned?
Your keys will be dropped off at your home within 7 days of the end of the contract or service period. We do not leave keys in your home on the final visit in case you are delayed in arriving home.

Is client information, keys, and alarm codes kept confidential?
Absolutely.

What if my pet becomes ill while I'm away?
The first choice is to take your pet to your usual vet. In case of an emergency however, we will have an emergency clinic they can rely on. Your pet sitter will ask for detailed instructions from you on what to do in case of emergency. And to initiate service it will necessary for you to complete our service agreement, which authorizes us to seek emergency medical care in your absence.

Is Pet Cater insured and/or bonded?
Yes. We have liability insurance which protects you should there be an incident while you are away. Bonding protects you and the pet sitting business should an employee prove dishonest. We are also bonded. We will gladly provide you with proof of our insurance and bonding, upon request.

Should I ask for references?
Most definitely! Ask for references and check on them.

Just what will the pet sitter do at my house?
Generally, the visits will consist of providing fresh food and water, play time, outdoor time, and special attention for your pet. Other services may be provided such as taking trash out, rotating lights, bringing mail in, and other such tasks. Please inquire about your specific needs, and we will provide you with details.

Should I call before I leave or when I get back?
Absolutely! Give your pet sitter a call right before you leave to confirm that you are leaving as planned. Another call is in order when you return home to let the pet sitter know your pets are safely in your care once more.

What do I need to do to start pet sitting service?
First, give us a call and set up a free consultation. We'll talk about your pet's special needs and develop a plan for caring for your pets.

If necessary, will the pet sitter take my pets to their (the pet sitter's) home?
No. We don't offer boarding services, but in the event that your pet becomes ill we can transport them to your vet and set up an extended stay at your residence to monitor your pets.

How much notice do you need to schedule a visit?
We ask that you contact us a week in advance to set up a free consultation. We can accommodate last minute arrangements if necessary, but our emergency 24/7 service is only available to clients who have signed an agreement.

What if I run out of food while I'm away?
We will buy the same food your pet eats and charge you for the food or any other needed supplies plus a $10 fee.

What happens if I will be delayed in returning home?
It is imperative that you inform us as soon as possible, if you will be arriving home late from your vacation in order for care to be continued. Please note that you will be charged for extra visits.

Will you charge me for sitting if I return early?
You will not be charged for unfulfilled visits if you return home early, unless we arrive at your home, before we are informed of your early return. It is extremely important that you let us know immediately if you will be arriving home early from your vacation in order for care to be discontinued. Any time we show up for a scheduled appointment, you will be charged for this, even if you are there.

My cat lives outside. Will you come and make sure he/she is fed and okay?
No. We cannot be responsible for cats that stay outdoors.

What if there is an emergency in my home, unrelated to my pet?
We will do everything possible to resolve the situation. We will contact your emergency contact for instruction before taking any actions, unless there the situation is otherwise urgent or critical.

Will you provide updates on my home or on how my pet is doing while I am away?
Yes. We will document the time we were there and everything that we did. We will also let you know if there was any unusual behavior with your pet or their eating habits.

Can I bring my pet to your home?
No. We provide services in your home only, where your pet is the most comfortable.

I have a family member or friend that will also visit, while I'm gone. Is that acceptable?
Many people like to include neighbors, relatives, and friends in pet sitting duties. This is apt to cause confusion. We cannot be responsible for any sitting assignment where others are going to share the workload. We advise that anyone considering this split of duties to make only one person responsible for the entire assignment.
